Body Armour

Really random, but why do we call it "body armor"? In medieval times, it was just called armor, and these days it does the same thing. We also specify it for tanks, planes, helicopters, and animals. I think the thing that armor originally... armored (which I imagine was humans) should just be called "Armor" and everything ELSE should be specified. That's just me, though.

Childhood

I was thinking today about my generation. I find it increasingly amazing just seeing how many things have happened since I was born. I grew up on VHS Disney movies like Lion King and Toy Story, and whenever I was in the car, my dad would play cassette tapes of either Jazz or we'd listen to comedians. Portable Cassette players had been around for around 10-15 years, and CD players were still a technological wonder when I was a kid. In a few weeks, I'll be 20, and everything has completely changed. I know some children only FIVE years younger than me that have never seen many of my childhood movies and don't remember ever using cassette tapes. Some older adults even have a hard time believing that I used to have a T.V. with a knob on it and NO remote!

This got me to thinking. With the average life expectancy being around 80, give or take a few years, some time around 2080, again giving or taking a few years, the very last of people to have ever been alive in the 20th century will die. This made me wonder if that was a big deal. I think it is. At the current rate of development in almost any area of research, I'm sure I'll be witness to many more inventions that will seem like a simple enough modification on what we already have. However, I'll always be able to compare it to something completely antiquated by it. I used to listen to tapes that fit maybe 2-3 hours of audio on them. Now my iPod holds literally DAYS of music, videos, and games. CD's never had "new models". They may have had more memory according to the brand, but a CD was a CD. Now almost every year or two, a new mp3 player comes out with new functions and gigabytes of spaces.

Technology isn't the only thing that has changed in my life. People's views have changed. New laws, new religions, new moral systems, new views. I guess I'm just wondering what the world will be like after the 20th century has died, and what we'll be leaving behind.

Good Balance

It has come to my attention as of late that people have been giving advice to others along the lines of: Don't bother worrying about what they think. I can see the usefulness of telling someone that, but I don't exactly agree with the implied meaning of it. Granted, worrying too much about what others think of you will make you a worry wart, but caring too little of what others think of you may lead to being a fairly large jerk. I read a quote in a big book o' quotes that I had lying around that I think gets the same general point across, without making it seem like you should literally not care at all. The quote was "If you take care of your character, your reputation will take care of itself." My book didn't have a name to go with the quote, but I wish it did. I think that might be a better thing to say instead of the former advice, simply because the former makes it sound like you shouldn't even bother trying, when in reality, you should. You just also have to realize that even if you are doing the rightest of the right thing, somebody isn't gonna like it.

Words are weird.

Especially the word "weird". Its always bothered me that it doesn't follow the 'I' before 'E' rule, even though if it did it would be pronounced the same as "wired" which would cause confusion sometimes. I looked up the etymology of "weird" and found out some pretty interesting stuff. Turns out it has gone through quite a bit of different spellings, differing by both country and time. It meant "fate/destiny" or "to turn/bend", but the reason why it is used today to describe odd things is because it got it's big break into the realm of commonly used words by describing the three fates of myth as "the weird sisters". This originally meant "the fate/destiny sisters", but as the fates were constantly described as odd-looking, the word soon became synonymous with that meaning as well. So thats your lesson for today. I can only hope that all that was true, because i got it from the internet. At least it wasn't wikipedia.

Well, well, well...

Well! I used to have a blog on here, but thought I'd delete it and make room for a new one. This one won't really be keeping you up with my life so much as it will inform you of my most random of thoughts. Sometimes they will be thought provoking, and other times, I do know the answer, and I simply post them for entertainment purposes. I don't actually have anything at the moment, aside from the word "well" looking weird to me right now because I typed it four times in a row. Happens to the best of us, right?

Right?
